Oklahoma State moves out of my projected field as they lost once again at home to Baylor. Taking their place is Utah State, who was my first team out. The Aggies are the bubbliest team out there, but a sweep of two remaining games at UNLV and home to Boise State should be enough to get them over the line.

A wild weekend of college hoops saw the fate of lots of bubble teams change dramatically. No team had a bigger win than Arizona State, who went on the road and knocked off arch rival Arizona. The buzzer beating halfcourt shot came from none other than Brown transfer Desmond Cambridge, who was the best player on Brown’s team when I was a student there a few years ago.

I’ve moved the Sun Devils into the field at the expense of Wisconsin, who lost at home to Michigan. The Wolverines are making quite a charge themselves and are now in my First Four Out.

The bubble has crystallized a bit in recent days- most brackets you look at will have the same at-large teams in the field that I’ve selected here. However, there’s plenty of room for that to change today. Oklahoma State, Mississippi State and West Virginia all could fall out of the field with a loss, and Arizona State has the potential to change the trajectory of their season if they can win a road game at Arizona.

Bracketology 2/22/2023

Not many teams in college basketball are hotter than Texas Tech. The Red Raiders beat Oklahoma on the road and are now 6-2 in their last 8. If they can go 2-1 in down the stretch and pick up a win in the Big 12 tournament I think they'll make the field.

There are some big bubble games tonight, highlighted by a late night clash between New Mexico and Boise State, two teams right near the cutline.

Bracketology 2/20/2023

The committee revealed their top 16 teams on Saturday. I had 15/16 teams correct- I had Connecticut instead of Indiana, the Hoosiers were my 17th team. I was pretty surprised to not see Connecticut- the committee seems to value predictive metrics for some teams (like Houston) but not for others (like Connecticut).

I’ve finally moved North Carolina out of the field after their loss to NC State. The Tar Heels are still without a Q1 win and will need to convert one of their two remaining opportunities at one- home dates against Virginia and Duke.

No team has moved faster through the bracket in recent weeks than New Mexico. The Lobos started the season far from relevance but surged to a 14-0 start. At 19-3 they were a comfortable 7 seed in my bracket but plunged out of the field with a 4 game losing streak, capped by a disastrous home loss to Wyoming. A pair of games against the class of the MWC (Boise State and San Diego State) awaits- they need at least a split to stay in the conversation.

If your team isn’t on this page, the chances of them making the tournament are pretty low. Historical precedent suggests that by this point in the season, we can expect that all but a half dozen of the final at-large teams are in my current field. There is always a chance for a team to come out of nowhere and go on a crazy run to make the field (2020 UCLA comes to mind) but it doesn’t happen every year.

Bracketology 2/6/2023

The best game of the weekend was St. Mary’s beating Gonzaga in overtime, cementing their place at the top of the WCC this year. The Gaels were looking shaky after a 6-3 start but now have top 10 computer metrics everywhere and after a 12 game winning streak they enter the protected seeds for the first time all year.

There are always a few teams whose resume looks a lot better than their computer numbers do. Often these teams fall off in the second half of the season and we’re seeing it here- Missouri has slid from a 5 seed to an 11 seed in recent weeks and Arizona State is almost totally out of the tournament picture.

A busy weekend of college hoops was highlighted by the Big 12/SEC challenge. The biggest winner of the event was Oklahoma, who demolished Alabama to snap a 3 game losing skid. The Sooners are the first team out of my bracket today, their predictive metrics are quite good but their Kenpom projection of 16-15 will not cut it to make the field.

Kansas has now dropped three games in a row which has taken them from the #1 overall seed to a 2 seed. The Jayhawks have every opportunity to get back to the 1 line, but if they finish 6-4 as Kenpom suggests they won’t get there.

When Skyy Clark left the team at the beginning of January, I thought there was a good chance that Illinois might miss the tournament. They’re 5-1 since then but yet to pick up a Q1 win during that span- they have a good opportunity for one this weekend against a sliding Wisconsin team.

I thought Houston stood a decent chance of finishing the season undefeated in conference play. They would’ve been a contender for the #1 overall seed had they been able to do that, but instead they lost a shocking game at home to Temple. I’ve kept them on the top line for now, but that’s mainly because the other contenders for the last 1 seed haven’t been great lately.

It’s a banner year in the Mountain West with 5 teams in my projection right now. I think at least one of Nevada and Utah State will drop out, but San Diego State, Boise State and New Mexico look reasonably safe.

Bracketology 1/21/2023

It’s difficult to overstate just how strong the Big 12 is this year. The league has a whopping 6 teams as top 6 seeds in this update, which is nearly unprecedented. Kansas was the victim of the league’s strength this week when they fell to Kansas State in Manhattan, bumping them off the top overall spot.

The Big 12’s strength comes at the expense of some of the other power conferences. The Pac-12 is notably week- UCLA and Arizona are both stone cold locks and Arizona State will probably make the tournament. Then there’s a mediocre USC team and a long way down after that.

Our two unlikely mid-major at-large hopefuls (Florida Atlantic and Charleston) keep on winning and are buying themselves valuable breathing room from the cut line. At the top of the bracket, UConn has hit a rough patch and is out of the 1 seed conversation. Meanwhile, UCLA hasn’t lost a game since Thanksgiving and is nearly up to the top line.

Conference play is now underway and we have a pretty unusual group of suspects at the top of the seed list. Of my top eight teams, only 2 (Kansas and Arizona) have received a 1 seed in the last decade. It is nice to see some new teams at the top but it is a bit weird to see Duke, North Carolina and Kentucky languishing in the middle of the seed list.

The balance of power in the middle conferences of the sport is a bit weird this year as well. The Atlantic 10 is having their worst year in memory with no teams in at-large contention and its leader (Dayton) all the way down on the 14 line. The Mountain West is picking up the slack with a whopping 5 teams in this update.

It’s been a month since my last update as I’ve been busy with NFL season and the World Cup. In that time, Connecticut has flown up the seed list and looks to be in line for their first 1 seed since Hasheem Thabeet and Kemba Walker were playing for the Huskies. We have a bit of a weird dynamic where two of the 1 seeds (Connecticut and Houston) play in conferences with only a few bids while others (Purdue and Kansas) will get plenty of quality win opportunities.

It’s shaping up to be an interesting year for mid-majors on the bubble. Charleston and Florida Atlantic haven’t sniffed an at-large in the 13 years I’ve been doing this, but both are off to great starts. Some of our usual suspects like the Atlantic 10 and Missouri Valley are quite weak this year- instead we have a bumper crop of contenders from the Mountain West and Conference USA.

Bracketology 11/28/2022

Feast Week is in the books and we’ve seen a lot of shakeups at the top of the bracket. None of my 4 preseason #1 seeds (Gonzaga, North Carolina, Baylor and Kentucky) remain on the top line. North Carolina has some legitimate problems to sort out but the other 3 teams will likely be protected seeds come Selection Sunday.

I debated a bit about who to put in the top overall spot, ultimately I went with Purdue. Their computer numbers are not as good as some of the other contenders but they clearly have the best wins so far.

My next update will come in around two weeks or so, the volume of big games will die down for a bit before picking back up around New Years’.
